power of coaching

Coaching, as we think of it today, is not that new. People have been doing variations of it for decades. Athletes have been using coaches and personal trainers for years to greatly improve their performance. Michael Jordan had a "shooting" coach (among the other 5 coaches he used) to win 6 championship rings and untold MVP awards. Tiger Woods used a "swing" coach before he won four consecutive major golf tournaments. Yes, they were good, but they became great because of individual coaching. The life coaching process is not limited to athletics or personal training. The life coaching process assists individuals to achieve a vast array of goals in the personal, business, spiritual, and family areas of life. Recently coaching has turned into a profession that is governed by a board; with guidelines, standards of conduct, and a code of ethics, and that is why the profession is growing as quickly as it is.

What is coaching?

Coaching is a very unique profession. It utilizes the best of therapy, consulting, mentoring, and even friendship, to create a unique client-helper relationship. This relationship is a powerful alliance - a partnership of sorts, which helps clients manage their lives, create more fulfillments, and live their dreams. For youth the relationship with a coach feels similar to that of a bunk counselor, or camp unit head. The coach’s primary focus and concern is their client, and fostering an incredible sense of trust to identify goals and dreams that lie deep within each individual. Coaching is action-oriented.

This is very different from traditional helping modes, where people want to get "fixed." Coaching focuses on solutions, not problems, to help transcend people from good to great.

YPCoach defines coaching as the ability to see the best and most positive characteristics and traits within individuals and the partnership that is created to guide and support them in their journey to self-discovery. Furthermore, it is a process that helps people tap into their inner purpose and passion and connect that with outer goals and tasks, to achieve extraordinary results. It is nearly impossible to describe the remarkable, and sometimes miraculous results that come from the coaching relationship.

What isn't coaching?

Most people who call themselves coaches are usually consultants or therapists, and although coaching has its basis in both, it is very different. The main difference between consultants and coaches is that a consultant promotes himself or herself as the expert in certain aspects of life, and the coach accepts that the client is the expert and has the answers to any situation within themselves. Also, a coach will stick with clients to implement plans of action, while consultants usually do not participate in this type of relationship and leave clients to implement the plan of action on their own.

The therapist's typical functions are to help clients fix problems, overcome issues, and sometimes manage mental illness. Coaches do not work with mental illness nor spend much time on client issues or problems. In fact, Certified Empowerment Coaches do not see anything as a problem, only a situation and opportunity. Coaches focus on solutions. They do not dwell on the client's past nor try to analyze behavior. Coaching's focus isn't so much on "why" but "how" to achieve powerful results. Coach Randy, founder of Your Personal Coach, is a certified personal coach.

There are several nuances in the field of coaching to the other elements of the helping professions. Coaches’ work with clients to implement plans of action. Coaches do not see anything as a problem, only a situation and opportunity. Coaches focus on solutions. They do not dwell on the client's past nor try to analyze behavior. Coaching's focus isn't so much on "why" but "how" to achieve powerful results.

- Therapy is about healing; Coaching is about achievement.
- Therapy is about safety; Coaching is about momentum.
- Therapy is about understanding; Coaching is about action.
- Therapy is about progress; Coaching is about performance.
- Therapy is about protecting; Coaching is about attracting.
- Therapy is about resolving; Coaching is about creating.
